“Hey Sisyphus. That’s some rock you’re pushing up the hill!”
Don’t you just feel like that some days? Pushing a rock up hill, hoping it doesn’t roll back down on you?
Just to clarify, in the original myth, Sisyphus was condemned for eternity to push a boulder up the hill and having it roll down, just before it reached the top. According to Greek mythology, this punishment was the result of his chronic deceitfulness.
(No, I’m NOT suggesting you are chronically deceitful, nor deserving of punishment).
In current parlance, of course, a “Sisyphean task” is one that seems impossible. And that does seem apt, in the post-sequestration world of Fiscal 2014. According to a recent survey, government spending is expected to be vastly over-weighted in Q4, relative to both the previous quarters in FY14, as well as by historical measures.
It’s not so much the spending that’s the issue though, is it? Rather, it’s the human capital time and outcomes expectations that make this seeming easy task Sisyphean. After all, when training and consulting needs have to be met within a short window of time, especially a window that covers much of the summer, having your employees find the time to devote to the training and/or consulting is more difficult than making that happen in another quarter.
And, knowing that the rest of the Federal Government is in the same boat only makes it slightly less Sisyphean. From the clients I’ve spoken to recently, there is some concern about finding excellent quality, accessible, measurable and meaningful solutions to meet those needs.
