How do you take what others have learned and best synthesize it and apply it to your business?
Having recently found myself at a business seminar and networking opportunity, with the founder of 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, I listened to his key points about entrepreneurs and building his businesses, not only with my business in mind, but with a thought about how various messages either resonate, or they don’t.
As a businessman who consults, coaches and trains other executives, this is always an interesting study for me, precisely because my successes are due to my messages getting through to those who hire me.
The event, entitled “From Zero to Growth (How to Double Your Revenue & Profit in Three Years)!”, and was held at the somewhat newly renovated arena stage, sponsored by CADRE. Cameron Herold is well known as the driving force behind 1-800-GOT-JUNK?’s spectacular growth from $2 Million to $106 Million in revenue (in just six years!). Also speaking at the event, was John Ruhlin, “The Gifting Expert”. All in all, an interesting evening.
So, here are the top ten thoughts I walked away with:
- Recognize that entrepreneurs are different types of people.
- Create a picture of where you want to be in three years, in a finished state that can be used as a way of creating alignment with your employees, clients, suppliers, and other key stakeholders.
- Identify key traits that you most want to find in your employees.
- Visualize a picture of the future state of your business and key traits as a way to effectively recruit people you most need in your organization and the repel people you don’t want.
- Engage your team to help map out a plan on how to accomplish key elements of your organizational strategy.
- Fire people who don’t produce results and/or don’t demonstrate your organization’s core values.
- Leverage technology as a tool to propel your organization.
- Be clear on the objective for your next meeting. Are you planning to share information, generate ideas for develop consensus decisions?
- Provide structure for team meetings: an opportunity to create value from what is in many organizations a time waster.
- Use personalized gifts as a tool to develop and/or enhance relationships with key stakeholders.
I know which of his top thoughts I already employ and which I might make better use of. How about you? Which of these thoughts resonate most with what you’re already doing?
In a sense, we are all like the employees, we want to and need to engage to drive our vision forward: the message often needs to be repeated, in different ways, for it to sink in.
