National Mentoring Month is a widespread campaign to publicize awareness around the importance of mentoring in society, as well as celebrate its positive impact. Mentoring in the workplace is an established partnership between colleagues for the purposes of learning and growth.

From leadership mentoring to supporting diversity and inclusion initiatives, there are many ways that mentoring can support your business in a positive way. Mentoring in the workplace also impacts the personal development of your valued employees, while also helping to provide positive support for good mental health and improving employee retention.

Coaching and mentoring both exist for the same purpose: to help individuals grow, develop and reach their full potential. Both coaching and mentoring give the opportunity for your employees to take responsibility for their own personal and career development.
Though both coaching and mentoring are similar in many ways, several distinctions make the approach to each somewhat different, including:
- A mentor’s approach is giving advice, while a coach rarely does so. In another distinction, a mentor gives direction and information, while a coach provides guidance for discovering that information.
- A coach doesn’t need to have previous knowledge, skills, or experience in a specific subject. A mentor is typically an expert in the field of interest.
- Coaches usually have previous training in coaching skills and methodology to guide clients through the process. Mentors don't need training in mentoring; their expertise is based on extensive professional backgrounds and work experiences.
- A coach asks powerful questions to elicit insights. Conversely, a mentor’s focus is to share their own experience and give direct advice. Mentors bring their knowledge, skills, and experience to guide others.
- Coaching facilitates awareness and self-directed learning, while mentors share their wisdom to provide insight and guidance.
- A mentor starts the relationship with a client who already knows what they want before starting the conversation. A coach helps the person identify what they want and how to create it for themselves.
